Hospice Care Ottawa is trying to change the provincial funding formula for hospices

Hospice Care Ottawa is working with other hospices and Hospice Palliative Care Ontario to change a funding approach that is now inadequate, unfair and unpredictable. We provide our services free of charge to all who need them, and yet our clinical costs are not fully funded by the government. We need to raise over $2.5 million annually just to cover our clinical costs, including paying nurses and personal support workers at our residences. We also need more funds to support our in-home visiting hospice services and for grief and bereavements programs.

How YOU can help advocate

We encourage you to be vocal about our needs for increased funding for hospice palliative care and why hospice care is so important in our community. Ultimately it is our Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) who will vote on whether increased funding for hospices will be made available. You can help by connecting with your local MPP and urging them to support this funding in the next Ontario Budget.

You can send an email to your MPP expressing your views on the importance of adequate funding for hospices.

Subject: Increased funding for Hospices

I am one of your constituents in the riding of XXX and am writing to ask for your support for better funding for hospice palliative care. Hospice Care Ottawa has joined with other hospices in Ontario in advocating for a change to the existing unfair funding formula so that all clinical costs are covered and the hospice does not have to raise $2.5 million each year just to stay in business.

Hospice palliative care is of critical importance in our community, and the need will only grow in the coming years. I would appreciate your support and attention to this issue.
