Caregiver Support

Hospice Care Ottawa offers counselling to caregivers who look after someone with a life-limiting illness if their loved one receives services from Hospice Care Ottawa. This is available to adults, adolescents, and children. Different approaches are used according to the needs and age of clients (e.g. for children sand play therapy and drawing may be used).

Our trained volunteers offer additional support to family members with complementary therapies such as Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, Reflexology, foot and back massage. Caregivers are also encouraged to attend our Caregiver Evening Out, Caregiver Yoga and occasional Caregiver ‘Day Away’ Retreats.

To make a referral, please call 613-680-0306 or click here to download a referral form.

Caregiver Evening Out

Caregiver Evening Out is designed for caregivers to come together to meet other caregivers who are dealing with similar yet different life experiences related to caregiving someone with a life limiting illness. There are opportunities to chat, ask questions, and relax. Guest speakers are occasionally invited and provide information on a variety of topics such as contingency/emergency planning, advanced care planning, and navigating the health care system. The evening includes a shared dinner where conversation and connections continue.  The program is facilitated by one of our Community Coordinators and volunteers.

The Caregiver Evening Out program is offered monthly at our sites.

This is what participants said about attending Caregiver Evening Out:

“Thank you so very much for hosting the caregiver meeting on Monday night. It’s an oasis of compassion.”

“It was marvelous to be pampered and served the way we were- it made me feel so special and appreciated.”

“To share our feelings amongst others living very similar lives was so therapeutic.”
