Homes for the Holidays 2019

Homes for the Holidays has wrapped up for another year!

The three day home tour was held on November 15, 16 & 17 and nearly 1,600 ticket holders enjoyed a weekend full of holiday splendor viewing exquisite homes seasonally decorated and shopping at our two special holiday stops.

We are delighted to share that after expenses we raised $135,000!  100% of the funds raised will go towards the palliative and end-of-life programs and services Hospice Care Ottawa provides, at no charge, to those living with a life-limiting illness and their families.

A big thank you to everyone who made the tour possible: the homeowners, florists/decorators, countless volunteers, sponsors, vendors, advertisers, donors and ticket holders.  Your support is an important contribution to the success of Homes for the Holidays and to the benefit of Hospice Care Ottawa.

260 Park Road, Rockcliffe Park

Decorated by: The Stalk Market
Presented by: WorldReach Software

This stone and clapboard house at 260 Park Avenue has been home to several illustrious residents.  The former home of Graham Towers, the first Governor of the Bank of Canada, it is now the formal residence of the Ambassador of Belgium.  The living and dining rooms reflect the diplomatic career of Johan Verkammen and his spouse Kathleen Billen, showcasing eclectic art from different continents, including Senegal, Syria, and Hong Kong.  Belgium being the birthplace of a globally recognized comic strip, you will be immersed in the world of Tintin as soon as you set foot in this cozy residence.

Decorated by: Stoneblossom Floral Gallery
Presented by: KPMG

Carsdale House is one of a kind on Carsdale Avenue in Rockcliffe Park - it is, in fact, the only address on the entire street.  The owners moved into the original home in 2011 with a five-year plan to rebuild.  Seven years later, they finally moved back in - just in time to witness the 2018 tornado.  This home was designed by local architect Denis Kane and built by the owner, president of Custom Properties Corp.  Open spaces and over-scaled windows blend with a mix of modern design paired with antiques, all coming together in a unique transitional style.

124 Powell Avenue, Glebe

Decorated by: Beaudry Flowers

Designed by architect David Younghusband in 1917, this Arts and Crafts home on a tree-lined street in the Glebe was renovated in 2004/05 and 2014/15.  Great care was taken to respect the architecture of the period, while updating and adding such amenities as an enlarged master suite, an exercise room, soaker tubs, and an elevator to the second floor bedrooms.  The heating system in this charming 4-bedroom home, with solid wooden floors and stain glass windows, is still hot water but with high-velocity air; the same boiler heats the backyard aquafitness pool and driveway.

Perennial gardens surround the inviting front walkway where you enter by the original main door with its refinished goat's head door-knocker.  The centre-hall plan has on the left a dining room with William Morris wallpaper, ancestral portraits and a Viennese chandelier, and on the right a full-width living room adjoining a verandah with comfy wicker furniture and a wooden swing.  As you leave through the library with one wall of books and another of birds, you pass through gardens that last year won the Ontario landscape design award of excellence in the "small and cozy" category.

8 Charles Jackson Avenue, Dows Lake

Decorated by: Karen Grand - Grand Designs and Scrim's
Presented by: La-Z-Boy

Built in 1942, this Cape Cod-style home occupies a piece of land that plays an important part in Ottawa's history.  It was built on what was once the Booth Lumber yard - part of the empire of John R. Booth, the Canadian lumber tycoon and railroad baron who supplied the wood in the construction of the Parliament Buildings.  Charles Jackson, for whom the street is named, was one of John Booth's sons.  The home has been extensively renovated since the current owners purchased it in 1989.  They especially enjoy the home's orientation - the front, with the kitchen, is east facing, while the dining room enjoys western sunsets.  While renovating, the owners sought to retain the original character of the home by repeating woodwork details that already existed and adding new cabinetry consistent with the age and style of the architecture.

555 Highland Avenue, Westboro

Decorated by: Trillium Floral Designs
Presented by: Art House Developments

This contemporary home commanding a corner lot in Westboro definitely has a WOW factor.  Designed by Alex Diaz of Art House Developments and Candace Sutcliffe, president of restaurant supplier C.A. Paradis, the home strikes a fine balance between the need for light and for privacy.  Wall-to-wall windows at the top of the vaulted ceiling create a bright and airy interior with lots of wall space to hang art while managing the need for privacy.  The heart of the main floor and entertaining central for the homeowners is the sophisticated kitchen - a big winner at the Ottawa chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association's April awards gala.  An open space with virtually no walls and a bank of windows overlooking the entertainment-styled back yard, hammered stainless steel, porcelain, and wood combine in a truly dramatic effect.

2022 Sharon Avenue, McKellar Heights

Decorated by: Flowers Talk Tivoli

Grand but intimate, this bespoke house is beautifully set on a corner lot in the well-established McKellar Heights neighbourhood.  Designed by John Henry of Terra Nova Construction, the attention to detail and craftsmanship has created a luxurious effect that is apparent throughout the house, including the doors, trim work, and distinguished staircase.  Following the trend to home automation technology, many aspects of this house can be controlled from a smartphone.  Conceived as a space for entertaining, large, airy spaces are well balanced with spaces for more relaxed engagements.  A recent addition to the home is a newly outfitted home office/lounge.

Decorated by: Mill Street Florist
Presented by: Summit Design and Construction Inc.- Ottawa Finished Basements

The before and after photos on display detail the incredible transformation of this home from its classic '80s charm to today's streamlined, on-trend, tailored style.  Nestled in a park-like setting among towering trees, this custom-built bungalow in Manotick has been extensively renovated to showcase an open concept complete with sleek, modern finishes.  A transitional design style sets the interior tone to a zen-like vibe.  Blending trend with function highlights an impressive transformation to contemporary, comfortable casual living in this beautiful home.  The lush grounds also offer private, tranquil outdoor living spaces.

5793 Longhearth Way, Manotick

Decorated by: Terra Plants and Flowers

This elegant home in an estate setting pays tribute to the classic Georgian style.  Although built in 2011, it embodies historic character through symmetrical architecture and period details.  The columned front portico, ellipse entry transom, decorative roof blocks, dormer windows, cupola-topped rear porch, and classic red brick are the hallmarks of an authentic Georgian aesthetic.  The interior carries a consistent traditional feel, with a tailored, retrained design.  The landscape was specifically designed to nestle the home in a natural setting, create an impressive reach approach, offer various areas for entertaining and include formal gardens.  The sophisticated home, interiors and landscape are the work of Eden Design.
