Gift of Securities
Thank you for considering a donation of publicly traded securities to Hospice Care Ottawa. Through our broker, we can accept different types of securities, including publicly listed shares, bonds or mutual fund units.
On May 2, 2006, the federal government eliminated the capital gains tax on donations of publicly listed securities to registered charities. Therefore, you will not pay any income tax on the capital gain that may be triggered by your donation to Hospice Care Ottawa. In contrast, if the securities are sold and the cash is then donated, 50% of the capital gain is taxable.
We strongly recommend that you consult with your financial advisor(s) before initiating any type of donation. This will ensure that you receive professional advice that is tailored to your personal financial and tax situation.
