Advocacy

Hospice Care Ottawa is trying to change the provincial funding formula for hospices

Hospice Care Ottawa has joined other hospices in asking the Ontario government to change our unfair funding formula.  Unlike hospitals, Ontario only funds about 60% of our clinical costs and hospices such as Hospice Care Ottawa face the arduous task of fundraising the rest to pay nurses and personal support workers.  We are expecting a provincial budget in April, 2022 and we have joined with Hospice Palliative Care Ontario in lobbying the provincial government to change this unfair situation.

How YOU can help advocate
We encourage you to be vocal about our needs for increased funding for hospice palliative care and why hospice care is so important in our community.  Ultimately it is our Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) who will vote on whether increased funding for hospices will be made available.  You can help by connecting with your local MPP and urging them to support this funding in the next Ontario Budget.

You can send an email to your MPP expressing your views on the importance of adequate funding for hospices.
Here is a sample email that could be sent with the one-pager attachment:
Subject: Increased funding for Hospices

I am one of your constituents in the riding of XXX and am writing to ask for your support for better funding for hospice palliative care.  Hospice Care Ottawa has joined with other hospices in Ontario in advocating for a change to the existing unfair funding formula as part of the upcoming budget.  The details are included in the attached one-pager.  Hospice palliative care is of critical importance in our community and I would appreciate your support and attention to this issue.

For anyone living in East Ottawa you could also add:
Increased funding would also allow Hospice Care Ottawa to open a third hospice residence in the east of Ottawa to help serve our francophone population.
